Hi Steve, it's my birthday and I'm looking at buying a new Nikon lens for myself. I want a wide angle lens which is good in low light and the lens I'm looking at are these ones! Which do you feel is the best.
1: Nikon AF 20mm f/2.8D
2: Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8

Hi Charles. Happy Birthday!

Only the 20mm is a wide angle, actually it's on the long side of "ultra-wide" angle. I have a Sigma 20mm F1.8 lens that I use for inside dark temples, caves, etc.. and it really shines in these areas, and at F8+ works well for exteriors.

50mm lenses are considered 'normal' view, and really I have little use for them. Especially a F1.8 on a crop frame camera (75mm which is nearer a portrait lens and far from a wide angle). On the other hands, one of my favorite vintage lenses is my Zuiko 50mm F1.2.. a very fast very high quality lens. I have 4-5 50mM F1.8 Zuiko lenses still new in the boxes unopened. That's how desirable they were.

So.., from these two.. the 20mm would be my choice. 35mm effective on your crop frame camera.. at F2.8 is will be soft no doubt.. but probably better than any wide zoom you own and it's a lot smaller and lighter.
